🟡 Massive Flood Hits Nepal
A devastating flash flood struck northern Nepal on Wednesday, August 26, sending a sudden surge through the Bhotekoshi River and causing widespread destruction in Rasuwa district along the Nepal–China border.
The latest reports put the confirmed death toll at at least 17-20 people, but authorities fear the number could rise as rescue teams reach areas that remain cut off.
🟡 Villages Swept Away
The worst-hit areas include Timure and Syaphrubesi, where floodwaters swept through settlements, markets and riverside infrastructure.
Eyewitness accounts describe entire settlements near the river being overwhelmed. Cars, buildings and bridges were carried away by the powerful current, while communications with some affected areas have been disrupted.
🟡 Hundreds Missing
The disaster has triggered a major search-and-rescue operation. A preliminary report cited by AP said 384 people were reported missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists. At least 291 foreign nationals were among those initially reported missing.
Reports also indicate that more than 100 Indian nationals are among those whose whereabouts are being sought.
The figures remain provisional because authorities are still trying to establish contact with people in the affected areas.
🟡 Roads and Bridges Destroyed
The flood has caused extensive damage to roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors.
Authorities have warned communities downstream as the flood surge moves through the Trishuli River, with residents in vulnerable riverside areas urged to move to higher ground.
🟡 Hydropower Sector Severely Hit
Nepal’s hydropower infrastructure has also suffered major damage. The Energy Ministry reported that approximately 430 MW of electricity capacity was affected, representing more than 12% of Nepal’s total hydropower capacity.
Several hydropower projects and transmission facilities near the river were damaged or forced to shut down.
🟡 Rescue Operation Intensified
The Nepali Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been deployed for rescue and relief operations. Helicopters have been sent to affected areas, although difficult conditions have prevented some aircraft from landing safely.
The Nepal government has ordered immediate rescue, medical treatment and relief operations and is working to restore damaged roads, telecommunications and electricity services. India and China have also expressed willingness to support Nepal’s rescue efforts.
🟡 What Caused the Sudden Flood?
The flood appears to have arrived with extraordinary speed. Officials said there was no significant rainfall in parts of Rasuwa when the flooding began.
Preliminary assessments point toward a possible ice-and-rock avalanche, glacial lake outburst or another sudden upstream event on the Tibetan side, but authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause.
🟡 Situation Remains Critical
The full scale of the disaster is still emerging. With rescue teams continuing to search for missing people and several areas difficult to access, authorities warn that the death toll and damage figures may increase.
Residents along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers have been urged to stay away from riverbanks and immediately move to safer locations.
