New York: A political controversy has erupted ahead of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s scheduled address at Madison Square Garden on August 29, with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly opposing the event.

The programme, titled “Universal Oneness Celebration,” is being organised by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue and is expected to bring together around 5,000 members of the Indian-American community. Organisers have described it as an initiative focused on shared heritage, interfaith dialogue, unity and civic engagement.

🟡 Mamdani Opposes Bhagwat Event

Mamdani said he does not support the rally, while acknowledging that the New York City administration may not have the legal authority to cancel a privately organised event.

The mayor said he was deeply concerned about what he described as the rise of an “exclusionary” political vision. He also invoked his Indian-American background, saying that the India he grew up knowing was a pluralistic and secular republic in which every citizen belongs equally.

🟡 Protests From US-Based Groups

The controversy has also drawn protests from several US-based civil-rights and interfaith organisations, including the Indian American Muslim Council, Hindus for Human Rights and the Interfaith Center of New York. The groups have criticised Bhagwat’s appearance and called for opposition to the event.

🟡 BJP Hits Back at Mamdani

Mamdani’s remarks have triggered a sharp response from BJP leaders in India.

BJP MP Bhola Singh defended the RSS, saying critics who do not understand the organisation make “incorrect and baseless” statements. He highlighted the RSS’s long-standing involvement in social service and nation-building. BJP leader Dr Syed Zafar Islam also argued that Mamdani neither has the authority nor the ability to stop the private event.

Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam also criticised Mamdani, accusing him of having a distorted understanding of pluralism and defending the RSS’s role in Indian society.

🟡 Congress Raises Questions

Congress leader Nana Patole has also entered the controversy, raising questions about the RSS’s activities, registration and funding while commenting on Bhagwat’s US visit. However, Patole also made a claim that the RSS has been designated a terrorist organisation in the United States; that claim should be treated as an allegation by Patole, not an established fact, and is not supported by the Reuters reporting on the controversy.

The broader political debate comes amid continued criticism of the RSS from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who recently accused the organisation of attempting to impose its ideological view on society.

🟡 RSS Defends the Programme

The RSS has rejected the criticism surrounding the event. RSS communications chief Sunil Ambekar said the Universal Oneness Celebration represents an interfaith gathering involving a diverse, multicultural and multi-faith audience, and invited those interested to understand the organisation and its views.

The organisation has described the programme as being conducted in the spirit of open dialogue and mutual respect, presenting it as part of its centenary-year global outreach.

🟡 A Growing Political Debate

The Madison Square Garden controversy has now developed into a wider debate involving free speech, religious pluralism, the RSS’s international outreach and the political divisions within the Indian diaspora.

With Bhagwat’s address still scheduled for August 29, attention is now focused on whether the event proceeds amid the growing protests and political exchanges on both sides.
