Companies and Wealthy People Are Fleeing New York: Babubhai Bhavanji

Former Mumbai Deputy Mayor and Shiv Sena leader Babubhai Bhavanji said that the developments taking place in New York after Zohran Mamdani’s rise to the mayoralty show what he described as “Mamdani-fication” of the city.
According to Bhavanji, an environment has emerged in New York in which companies, large businesses, corporations and wealthy individuals are considering moving to other locations within the United States. He said that people dependent on these businesses, particularly salaried middle-class and upper-middle-class residents, could also follow them.
Bhavanji argued that the city’s economic base could come under pressure if high-income residents and businesses relocate. He claimed that wealthy individuals and major taxpayers play a disproportionately large role in New York’s tax revenues.
The debate over the possibility of wealthy New Yorkers leaving the city has intensified since Mamdani’s election and his proposals to increase taxes on high-income residents. Critics have warned that higher taxes could encourage some wealthy residents and businesses to relocate, while Mamdani and economists supporting his policies have disputed the scale of any such migration.
Mamdani’s administration has continued to pursue policies aimed at increasing revenue from high-value property and wealthy residents while directing additional spending toward public services. At the same time, his administration has established a Business Advisory Council involving leaders from finance, real estate, technology, retail, health care and other sectors.
The question of whether New York’s tax and economic policies will lead to a significant movement of wealthy residents and businesses remains contested. Available reporting and statements from economists indicate that some wealthy taxpayers may relocate, but there is disagreement over the scale of such migration.
